Earthquake Of Magnitude 7 Strikes Philippines, Indonesia Stuck With 6.8 Magnitude Jolts

2024 has been a little tumultuous so far, to say the least. On the very first day of the year, Japan’s Ishikawa region experienced a strong earthquake. Hundreds of lives were lost and people are still missing. Adding to this, the southern Philippines and Indonesia’s Talaud Islands have experienced strong earthquakes with magnitudes 7 and 6.8, respectively, this morning. There are no lives lost or any tsunami alerts in these regions so far, thankfully.

Strong Quake Shakes Both The Earthquake-Prone Countries

Indonesia and the Philippines are two popular tourist destinations as well as earthquake-prone areas of Asia. According to the National Center for Seismology, the coast of the southern Philippines and Indonesia’s Talaud Islands experienced strong earthquake waves at 2.18 AM (IST).

The magnitude of the earthquake in the Talaud Islands was 6.7 on the Richter scale. While the Philippines experienced strong tremors of magnitude 7. According to the US Geological Survey, the depth of the earthquake was about 70 kilometres. The identified epicentre is around 100 kilometres southeast of Sarangani, Philippines.

Thankfully, No Casualties Or Loss Of Life Reported So Far!

So far, there have been no reports of missing people or lives lost in the earthquake-affected regions. As per the Philippines Seismological Agency, while the magnitude and depth of origin of this quake are high, there are no trigger warnings of tsunami. According to the locals in the area, the tremors felt were mild and nothing too serious or life-threatening.

In December 2023, the Philippines also experienced an earthquake of magnitude 7.6. The epicentre of the earthquake was found around Mindanao, and there was a brief tsunami warning as well with at least a death toll of three.

No matter how earthquake-prone the country is, such natural disasters are destructive and life-threatening. We hope Indonesia, as well as the Philippines, has a speedy recovery from this bumpy start of 2024.
