What Is Egypt’s e-Sakafa Platform & How Will It Change Cultural Access For Residents?

For a lot of people, cultural palaces in Egypt have always been tied to school trips, local theatre shows or small community workshops growing up. But reaching those spaces regularly isn’t always easy, especially for people living far away or in smaller towns. Now the Ministry of Culture in Egypt wants to bring a big part of that experience online with a new initiative called e-Sakafa.

Egypt Is Building A Digital-Culture Platform Called e-Sakafa

A new virtual platform called e-Sakafa is currently being developed in partnership with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. The idea behind it is simple make cultural activities easier to access digitally instead of limiting them to physical venues.

People Will Be Able To Join Activities Online

According to officials, the platform will act as one central space connecting cultural palaces across Egypt. Users will reportedly be able to watch performances, access educational material, read cultural content and even join workshops remotely.

Instead of travelling long distances to attend events or exhibitions, audiences may eventually be able to participate through their phones or laptops. The ministry also says the platform aims to connect artists and creators more directly with the public instead of keeping activities tied to one location.

Cultural Palaces Are Getting Digital Upgrades Too

That said, the project still seems to be in the preparation phase.

Authorities confirmed they are currently collecting information and data for cultural palaces across different governorates before introducing free internet services at those locations.

Each venue is also expected to receive a digital “Work Place” platform. From what’s been shared so far, these spaces will help visitors interact with educational and cultural activities more easily inside the palaces themselves.

So it’s not only about online access. Physical venues are getting updated too.

The e-Sakafa app is expected to include theatre performances, workshops, artistic projects and various cultural publications from across the country.

Metro Performances And Local Events Will Also Get Apps

Interestingly, the ministry is working on more than one digital project right now.

Another app is reportedly being developed for artistic and musical performances happening inside the Cairo Metro. Users will be able to browse shows by date, programme details and locations.

Also, Qena Cultural Palace is getting its own dedicated application to help people check activity schedules and local cultural events more easily.

For many younger audiences, especially, this shift towards digital access probably feels overdue. Cultural activities increasingly live online anyway, whether through videos, livestreams or social platforms.
