In a bid to prepare for the arrival of its fleet of 65 Airbus A350s from mid-2024, Emirates has partnered with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and Airbus to introduce a Competency-Based Training and Assessment (CBTA) program for the Airbus A350 type rating. This collaboration marks a significant step towards ensuring that Emirates pilots receive the most comprehensive and effective training for operating the state-of-the-art A350 aircraft.

With an initial cohort of 256 pilots set to undergo training at Emirates’ Training college in Dubai starting from July 2024, this joint effort brings together the expertise of three leading organizations in the aviation industry. IATA will leverage its published guidance for CBTA program design, while Airbus will contribute its extensive knowledge of the aircraft and CBTA experience. Emirates, with its own CBTA training and operational expertise, will play a crucial role in delivering the training program.
This collaboration will develop and deliver the first A350 type rating training fully aligned with the latest International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards for CBTA training. By harnessing the best practices outlined in the IATA CBTA Guide for Flight Crew Training, the program will ensure that Emirates pilots are equipped with the necessary skills to operate the A350 in the most efficient and effective manner possible.
