And this is not the first time an Emirati businessman is doing such a noble deed. Earlier, Firoz Merchant, founder and chairman of retailer Pure Gold Group paid off AED 1 million to free 700 prisoners in the UAE.

The businessman released prisoners from 30 different countries including Afghanistan, Iraq, India, Pakistan, Philippines, Russia and Thailand. This gave the prisoners another chance and and return to their home country. The noble deed is a part of Forgotten Society- a programme he founded in 2008. “The UAE is home to people of various cultures and religions, and the country has given hope and second chances to many,” said Mr Merchant.

Mr Merchant was also among the few expats to receive permanent residency earlier this year.
