DiscoverEU, An Exciting Opportunity For Young Travellers
Following the success of its previous campaigns, the European Union is back with DiscoverEU. This unique opportunity offers young travellers a chance to explore the diverse cultures and stunning landscapes of Europe, all while travelling by rail. In 2025, the EU is giving away 36,000 free rail passes to 18-year-olds who will be able to use their rail pass for up to 30 days between July 1, 2025, and September 30, 2026.
This includes a maximum of seven travel days, providing plenty of time to explore Europe’s vibrant cities and scenic countryside. However, the pass is only valid for one departing and one returning journey within the applicant’s home country. The primary aim of the scheme is to encourage young Europeans to experience different cultures on the continent.
Alongside the rail pass, DiscoverEU winners will receive a European Youth Card (EYCA). This card offers a range of discounts across Europe and provides access to savings on transport, accommodation, and cultural attractions. It is valid for one year and aims to enhance the travel experience even further.
All You Need To Know About This Programme
DiscoverEU is open for 18-year-olds born between July 1, 2006, and June 30, 2007. To take part in this programme, the applicants will have to answer five multiple-choice general knowledge questions. They will also be asked to outline their travel plans and explain how they intend to fund their journeys. Based on their responses, they will be ranked and if the number of applications exceeds the available passes, a first-come, first-served approach will be used.
According to Travel and Tour World, DiscoverEU is open for legal residents of one of the 27 EU member states or those who live in a country participating in the Erasmus scheme like Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia, and Turkey. To apply for DiscoverEU, you can visit the European Youth Portal and submit your application by April 16.
