Floods In Southern China: Over 110,000 People Evacuated While Others Rely On Lifeboats To Avoid Drowning

Southern China has been experiencing heavy downpours since April 18. These intense rains have sparked massive floods in the Guangdong Province that have already claimed the lives of four people. Seeing the extreme weather conditions, the authorities have been forced to evacuate more than 110,000 people on Monday. The record-breaking floods have affected many cities and villages in southern China.

Floods Swamp Southern China; 110,000 People Evacuated

Heavy rain lashed southern China recently and it has triggered massive floods in various parts of the Guangdong Province. This densely populated area is home to 127 million people. Seeing the extreme weather conditions over the last few days, around 110,000 people were evacuated and relocated to safer places. Sadly, the floods have already claimed four lives and have reported several missing people.

The massive floods have swamped several cities and villages surrounding the Pearl River Delta in southern China. Many videos and photos also surfaced online that showed the destruction and devastation caused by the flooding. Some of these videos showed how residents had to flee from their homes using lifeboats to avoid drowning. There are also visuals of almost completely submerged villages, with only the roofs of houses visible.

Extreme Weather Sparks Fear As The Region Faces ‘Once A Century Flood’

Guangdong in China is prone to summer floods. However, the annual flooding usually occurs in June. This year these floods came early at Pearl River Delta. According to the local Chinese media, the Pearl River basin has been flowing above the warning line for the past week. This has caused the authorities to issue a warning of a “once-a-century flood” in the Bei River, a tributary of Pearl River. High-intensity winds and heavy downpours in the area have raised concerns about the region’s defenses against bigger calamities.

The heavy rains have caused the water levels in the region to reach a 50-year high. This led to early flooding and massive disruption in the area. According to reports, 1.16 million households across Guangdong province had to survive without electricity over the weekend. Thankfully, power was restored in 80% of the houses by Sunday night.
