Yes, khichdi, dal-chawal are comfort foods but in the same breath we can’t eliminate French fries. Just biting into the crispy thinly sliced potatoes, dunked in tomato sauce, while bingeing on a show is quite an emotion. Sometimes, what starts with a harmless fry ends up veering into not one but even two plates of fries. Here’s where all French fries lovers need to stay wary, a new study says your favourite snack could cause depression and anxiety.

Study On French Fries Reveals Its Shocking Link To Mental Health

A study conducted by researchers in China’s Hangzhou has found that frequent consumption of French fries or fried potatoes has a close link to anxiety and depression. The study states that people who frequently eat fried food like french fries had a 7 per cent higher risk of suffering from depression and 12 per cent more likely to get anxiety-related issues than those who don’t eat fried food items, as per CNN.

Apart from anxiety and depression, fried food will also cause obesity and high blood pressure-related issues. This research opens people’s minds to reducing fried food consumption not just for the safe of physical health but mental health as well. However, experts state that these are only preliminary results. They are yet to gain clarity on whether fried food trigger already existing depression and anxiety symptoms or cause mental health issues.

Eating More Fried Food Can Cause Depression & Anxiety

This research is published in the PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America) journal. This link is more pronounced among younger consumers and young men. Lifestyle medicine specialist, Dr David Katz revealed to CNN revealed this study states that a higher intake of fried food increases the risk of depression or anxiety. He further says that people already suffering from these symptoms may resort to eating fried food as comfort food to soothe themselves.

Well, this study certainly opens our eyes to how fried food not just negatively impacts our physical health but our mental health as well. It reinstates the fact that we must be more mindful of the food we consume.
