Pictures, videos, and news of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre in Thiruvananthapuram on February 27 are making rounds on the Internet. One of the primary reasons behind this visit was to announce the names of the astronaut designates for the Gaganyaan Human Space Flight Mission. It is the first crewed space mission of India, and here’s all you need to know about it.

PM Modi Recently Announced Astronauts’ Names For ISRO’s Gaganyaan Programme

Taking to the X (formerly Twitter) platform, Dr Jitendra Singh (@DrJitendraSingh) shared a video of the event conducted recently.

India’s first human spaceflight project and the announcement of astronauts involved with this incredible mission are such grand news. In the event conducted at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre on Tuesday, PM Modi met and interacted with the four astronauts chosen for the Gaganyaan programme.

As announced by Narendra Modi, the astronaut designates for the mission are Group Captain Ajit Krishnan, Group Captain Angad Pratap, Group Captain Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair, and Wing Commander Shubhanshu Shukla. These four men are the first four astronauts from the nation to be a part of this human spaceflight project, the first of its kind in India. PM Modi also awarded astronaut wings to these astronauts.

These astronauts have the major responsibility of flying to low-Earth orbit for the first time in this mission. They will fly aboard the Gaganyaan Crew Module of the Indian Space Research Organisation. Also, for 3 days, they will fly at an altitude of 400 km.

PM Modi addressed a programme at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre yesterday.

All these astronauts have undergone proper training procedures for the mission. Jitendra Singh, the Union Minister of Science and Technology, stated that the Gaganyaan Human Space Flight Mission is set to launch in the next year. The government has approved a total of 3 missions under this programme. While one of these is manned, the other two are unmanned.
