In a world where the lines between business and leisure are increasingly blurred, business travel has evolved from a mere necessity into an opportunity for discovery, growth, and inspiration. The rise of “bleisure” travel—where work and personal exploration merge—has reshaped how professionals experience the world, turning business trips into chances to delve into new cultures, forge meaningful connections, and even rewrite the narrative of traditional travel. It was during this exciting time of transformation that we had the privilege of engaging with Anshuman, a seasoned traveller and contributor to the anthology ‘Going Places’.
The Evolution Of Business Travel
No longer just a means to close deals or attend meetings, bleisure has become a powerful tool for leaders to gain a deeper understanding of global markets, cultures, and people. Anshuman’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of travel. His contributions to the book “Going Places” offer a glimpse into his rich experiences and the profound impact they’ve had on his personal and professional lives.
Anshuman Magazine’s journey into the world of travel writing began with a conversation with Stefano Pelle, a long-time friend and the author of “Going Places.” As Anshuman shared, “My contribution to ‘Going Places’ was primarily influenced by my two-decade-long friendship with Stefano Pelle.” This connection was the catalyst that led him to contribute to the book, where he could share his passion for exploring diverse cultures and destinations.
When it came to selecting which travel experiences to include in his chapter, Anshuman focused on moments that were not only personally significant but also offered broader insights into the essence of travel. He aimed to highlight experiences that were “transformative or exceptionally memorable,” painting vivid pictures of the places he visited and the people he met.
One such experience that stands out is his journey to Cuba. Anshuman’s fascination with Cuban culture began during his college years, when he first discovered Cuban jazz. Listening to artists like Arturo Sandoval and Chucho Valdes, he developed a deep love for the music and the country that produced it.
Despite the political challenges and travel restrictions that made it difficult to visit Cuba, Anshuman seized the opportunity during a business trip to Canada. “My travel to Cuba was a serendipitous detour rather than a meticulously planned itinerary,” he recounted, capturing the essence of spontaneity and curiosity that defines true exploration.
Navigating Challenges And Embracing Kindness
Anshuman’s visit to Cuba was not without its challenges. However, it also revealed the profound kindness of strangers and the importance of adaptability. He vividly remembers the day when, while planning his return trip from Cuba, he encountered an unexpected hurdle. “I discovered that I needed a transit visa for Canada—something I had not anticipated,” he shared. With the Canadian Embassy closed for the weekend, Anshuman found himself stranded.
In a moment of distress, he experienced the power of kindness. His taxi driver took him to a nearby bank, where a compassionate employee, despite the language barrier, helped him exchange his traveller’s cheques for local currency. This simple act of kindness allowed him to meet his immediate needs and find a solution to his predicament. “This experience was a valuable life lesson for me,” Anshuman reflected. He emphasises the importance of remaining adaptable and resourceful in the face of travel challenges.
The Unifying Power Of Travel
One of the most striking aspects of “Going Places” is how it brings together travel stories from a diverse group of business leaders. Each chapter offers unique perspectives, yet a common theme of embracing diversity and learning from different cultures runs through the entire book. Anshuman was particularly moved by the chapter “An Afghan Adventure,” written by Ed Maliski.
This theme of empathy and curiosity resonated with Anshuman. He also realised that travel is not just about visiting new places. It is also about understanding and appreciating the people and cultures we encounter.
Anshuman’s time in Cuba offered a profound cultural immersion that left a lasting impact on him. One of the most memorable aspects of his visit was his encounter with the vibrant Cuban music scene. Despite missing live performances by his favourite musicians, Anshuman was captivated by the pervasive and passionate musical expression throughout the country.
This experience deepened his appreciation for how music can connect people and convey the soul of a culture. It also highlighted the importance of education and artistic expression in Cuban society, offering a thought-provoking perspective on societal development.

Balancing Business And Personal Travel
For a business leader like Anshuman, balancing professional responsibilities with personal exploration is a delicate art. He often plans his personal travel around his professional commitments. It ensures that business engagements are prioritised while leaving evenings and weekends for personal exploration. “Planning in advance and setting clear priorities help me to manage both aspects effectively,” he explained, emphasising the importance of adaptability and strategic planning in managing the demands of business travel.
Anshuman’s approach to travel is not just about managing time. It is also about embracing spontaneity and being open to new experiences. His trip to Cuba, despite the initial challenges, became an opportunity to explore a unique culture. He certainly gained valuable insights that enriched his personal and professional life.
“Going Places” stands out from other travel books due to its comprehensive exploration of diverse locations and cultures. Unlike many travel books that focus on a single destination, “Going Places” offers a panoramic view of the world through the eyes of various business leaders. Anshuman praised the book’s emphasis on firsthand experiences. He notes that each chapter is crafted from the author’s personal journeys and encounters.
A Recommendation For Business Leaders
When asked to recommend a travel destination for other business leaders, Anshuman chose Cuba. He believes that Cuba’s vibrant culture, rich history, and unique economic landscape offer valuable lessons in resilience and adaptability. “Cuba’s vibrant culture and history provide valuable lessons in resilience and adaptability,” he emphasised.
As for future travel plans, Anshuman is particularly excited about his upcoming trip to Norway. Known for its stunning natural beauty and positive vibes, Norway offers a unique blend of history, culture, and adventure. “Norway is definitely known as the ‘happiest country in the world’ for a reason,” he remarked.
