In-Flight Theft Warning: Travellers Urged To Stay Alert To Cabin Distraction Scams

Flights are safe, but thefts can occur at 35,000 feet. Now, authorities are on high alert to warn travellers to be vigilant about in-flight thefts. Thieves use distraction tactics in the air cabins to steal your belongings.

Cabin Distraction Thefts: Passengers Need To Be Vigilant

The alert comes as more people travel overseas during peak travel times. The Department of Migrant Workers has sent out a warning, as reported by the Gulf News, to remind travellers that even the most closely watched cabins on board can be the target of theft.

How Some Thieves Distract Passengers On Board

One of the most common tactics involves creating chaos. The advisory notes that some people may accidentally spill drinks or food on a passenger. As the passenger responds to the spill, they are distracted from their bags, wallets or cell phones.

Another method is more subtle. A person may ask for directions or assistance with something. In this brief encounter, they can take the opportunity to steal unattended items.

Crowding also plays a role. In crowded aisles or during take-off and landing, pickpockets may bump into people or cause distractions in close quarters. Those few distracted seconds can be enough.

They may even offer to help with luggage in the overhead trays. While seemingly helpful, they may be looking for valuable items.

Landing Time Could Prove More Risky

Disembarking from the aircraft is another opportunity for theft. People are preoccupied with passports, mobile phones or trying to get off the plane. In crowded airports, pickpockets can easily disappear into the crowd.

For people who have passports, money, jewellery or electronics, that moment of distraction can be costly.

How To Keep Travellers’ Possessions Safe

Airline security experts recommend travellers keep their valuables in sight during the flight. It is better to keep bags with valuables under the front seat rather than stowing them at a distance in the overhead storage.

It’s also best to use bags with zips. Passengers should keep passports, money and electronic devices out of seat pockets where they can easily fall out.

And if passengers have any concerns, they should report them to the crew. Crew members know how to handle issues of concern and can respond to emergencies if necessary.
