Sinkhole Found At LaGuardia Airport

As per a report by the New York Post, a sinkhole was discovered near a main runway, which led to hundreds of flights being delayed and cancelled. According to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the crew members identified the sinkhole roughly at 11:00 am Wednesday during a routine morning examination of the airfield. Runway 4/22 was taken out of use immediately while emergency construction and engineering teams stepped in to evaluate the damage and begin repairs.

A spokesperson told the portal that the Port Authority is in close communication with airlines and airport partners and will continue providing updates as conditions evolve. He further stated that travellers should expect delays and cancellations, especially with forecast thunderstorms anticipated later today, and are strongly advised to check directly with their airlines for the latest flight status information.

With LaGuardia functioning on just one open runway, capacity fell sharply at one of the busiest times of day. The Federal Aviation Administration started slowing arrivals into the airport, and airlines modified schedules to cope with the reduced throughput. As reported by WCNC, 17% of flights at LaGuardia were cancelled, and 22% of flights were delayed.

Passengers Share Their Experience On Social Media

Many travellers took to social media to share their experience. An IT manager from Alabama, Kit Deason, wrote on his X account, “We flew around Manhattan in a weird direction. Lately, with all the mishaps and near misses at major airports, I’m thankful they found it before a plane went into it. I hope there were no injuries.”

Ryan Mastian told the portal that the pilot stated that there were delays because the planes were ‘single file lining up at LaGuardia’. He further said that they didn’t say ‘sinkhole’. He is a firefighter, so he was aware that if they’re shutting down runways, there’s a problem.
