As per Father Patricio Fernandes SJ, Rector of the Bom Jesus Basilica, the urgent restoration work is being done due to the termite and wood borrowing insect situation in the church. It has been causing a havoc in the church for years and now, it needs to be restored. If not taken action, the infestation may cause some irreparable damage to the church interiors. The Archaeological Survey Of India Chemical Branch in Mumbai will be taking care of the restoration project in Goa. They have been planning over this from July and now, finally the restoration work will commence.

Restoration Works At The 400-Year Old Church To Begin

Apart from treating the insect infestation at this 400-year old church, the water development department too, will be carrying on work near the pandal. The department will level up the low-lying area near the pandal. This is being done to avoid the filling of water in that area during the rainy season in Goa. Additionally, there will be other minor projects too, which will be done during this one month period at the Bom Jesus Basilica. Also, for the Sunday masses and other spiritual programmes, it will be available for the people on the Basilica’s official Youtube channel and on the  St Francis Xavier Official app too.

This Basilica in Goa holds the remains of St Francis Xavier and is a major pilgrimage centre for Christian followers.
