Metro systems in India across major metropolitan cities are quite efficient and one of the most convenient modes of transportation. These days various developments and upgrades have been seen in the metro system across cities. In a major move to improve Bengaluru’s urban transport system, the state cabinet approved the metro line that will connect Sarjapur to Hebbal via Koramangala and Mekhri Circle (Phase 3A).

Though it is still far from being completed, the proposed route, which would link Bengaluru’s northern and southern regions across the central business district and involve eight other forms of transportation, is anticipated to transform metro travel, as reported by The New Indian Express.
The Sarjapur-Hebbal Metro line was first valued at ₹16,00 crore during Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s July 7, 2023, budget speech. But in the updated Detailed Project Report (DPR) that was turned in two months ago, it was changed to ₹28,405 crore.
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development and the Centre’s Institute of Urban Transportation must approve the project before work can start, according to the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), as reported by TNIE. These organisations will independently review the DPR and offer recommendations for inclusion.
Ten central departments—including Niti Aayog, the Ministry of Railways, Civil Aviation, Environment, Economic Affairs, and Statistics—will get the updated DPR. Their input is needed before the final DPR is presented to the Union Cabinet for approval.
According to officials, the approval procedure is expected to last six months to a year, with a possible clearance date of June 2025. However, depending on the speed of the review, the schedule may stretch to December 2025, as reported by TNIE.
Why Is There A Delay In Submitting Detailed Project Report?
Changes in alignment and station design caused major delays in the Sarjapur-Hebbal Metro line’s DPR. Due to the line’s two intersections with the BBMP’s elevated corridor and tunnel project, the DPR, which was created by RINA Consultancy for BMRCL, needed several revisions to avoid conflicts with other infrastructure projects, as reported by TNIE.
Originally intended to be a subterranean station, the design of the finishing station at Hebbal was significantly altered to make room for infrastructural developments. The accessibility of government-owned land alongside the road from the Air Force station to Hebbal played a role in the decision.
Once it is operating, the Sarjapur-Hebbal line is expected to greatly improve Bengaluru’s public transit system by easing traffic and guaranteeing smooth communication.
