Pookie Baba Shares Story That Changed His Life Forever & How He Built An Ashram That Houses 315 Mothers

There are some interviews you watch for entertainment, and then there are some that quietly stay with you long after they end. The Sunday Brunch with Kamya Jani featuring Pookie Baba belonged firmly in the second category.

Why Pookie Baba Dedicated His Life To Caring For Elderly Women

The episode unfolded inside the peaceful Gauri Gopal Ashram in Vrindavan, where the day was spent meeting more than 300 vridh matas, sharing a satvik bhojan, and witnessing the remarkable scale of the Akhand Rasoi. It was calm, spiritual, and warm, but the most powerful moment arrived in the middle of a conversation.

Kamiya Jani, our editor-in-chief, asked the obvious question. Most people of his age are building careers, chasing promotions, entering boardrooms, and making LinkedIn announcements. He chose a life that looks nothing like that. Why?

Pookie Baba did not answer with philosophy, but with a memory. He recalled visiting a small place years ago to deliver a sermon. After it ended, an elderly mother came to him and made a request so startling that it stopped him cold. She said that when she died, he should light her funeral pyre.

He was taken aback. Why him? She had a son. He told her plainly that the responsibility belonged to her son, not to an outsider. She told him the son who would not give her water while she was alive, who would not feed her, who would not care whether she had eaten or rested, was hardly going to appear as a dutiful son after her death. If he could not stand beside her in life, why expect him in death?

From Career Paths To Ashram Life: Pookie Baba Gets Real

Pookie Baba said that moment felt like God speaking through her. He understood it as a call; if there are mothers with no one left to care for them, then perhaps that care had become his work.

Today, that decision has shape and scale. He shared that there are now many matas living in the ashram, cared for with dignity. What began with one woman’s pain has grown into a refuge. The ashram also runs one of the biggest kitchens in the area. During the COVID years, when tourism in Vrindavan collapsed and livelihoods disappeared almost overnight, food became a crisis. So they started the Akhand Rasoi.

Six years have passed since then. Not one day has the kitchen stopped and not one day has food service paused; it runs 24/7. That is what purpose can look like when it leaves speeches behind and enters a kitchen.
