Government Aims To Name All The AIIMS After Local Heroes, Monuments, And Geographical Identities

India is the home to over 20 All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). And these are known by their generic names and their location. These premier health institutes are built under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana. The great news is that they may soon get new names all across India. The Union health ministry has already drafted a proposal to name individual names to all the institutes. AIIMS will get names after freedom fighters, regional heroes, and more.

Government Aims To Name All The AIIMS!

As per the official sources, most of the AIIMS in the country have already submitted a list of names as the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare asked for recommendations and suggestions on this. AIIMS will have new names with respect to freedom fighters, regional heroes, monuments of the location, notable geographical identities, or historical events, a senior official stated. All the AIIMS of India includes every institute be it fully operational, partly functional, or the ones currently under construction.

Some Of These Institutes Are Operating Fully And Some Are Under Development

As per various reports, most of these institutes have already given a few names for naming the AIIMS. In fact, they also included the reason and explanation behind these suggested names. India’s first AIIMS was established in New Delhi in 1956. From 1956 to 2022, India currently has a total of 24 of these premier health institutes. In between these, 19 are functional and the other 5 will start operating by 2025.

Presently, 6 AIIMS in 6 Indian states are operating fully and got approval in Phase 1 of Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY). These institutes are in Rishikesh in Uttarakhand, Patna in Bihar, Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh, Bhubaneswar in Odisha, Raipur in Chhattisgarh, and Jodhpur in Rajasthan. In the period of 2015 and 2022, India witnessed the construction of 16 AIIMS. And 10 institutes out of these 16 have both classes and outpatient department services. 2 institutes among the 6 only conduct MBBS classes. And the rest of the 4 institutes are currently in various stages of construction.
