Gurleen Pannu Got Into Comedy By Accident
After some shopping and witnessing Gurleen’s haggling skills, it was finally time for some pet puja, and we headed to the famous spot in Sarojini Nagar, Amar Jyoti Restaurant. A quiet escape from the bustling streets filled with vendors, it was the perfect place for an insightful conversation with Gurleen. She shared how her career as a stand-up comedian happened by accident.
While in college in Chandigarh, she was always artistic, participating in theatre and sketching. She heard about an open mic event, and one of her friends nudged her to give it a shot, motivating her by saying she could probably do it really well. Gurleen thought there was no harm in trying. She revealed that her first-ever open mic went quite well, and if it hadn’t, she probably wouldn’t have pursued it further. But one thing led to another, and she started participating in more open mics. Later, she also began getting open spots for other comics in Chandigarh, which helped her gain recognition in the comedy circuit.

This Is What Makes Her Nervous While Performing
We were curious to know if she was nervous before performing at an open mic for the first time. Gurleen said she definitely was; her hands even trembled when she held the mic. However, she wasn’t nervous about being on stage in front of a crowd, as she had prior theatre experience. What made her nervous was the fear of not making people laugh.
As we learnt more about her journey, we also wanted to know how her family reacted to her career in stand-up comedy. Gurleen shared that while she was performing at open mics in college, she hadn’t revealed her interest in comedy to her parents. She would make excuses to stay out late at night when performing at open mics and opening spots for other comedians. They definitely knew she had an interest because she would post videos on social media, but she didn’t formally tell them until it was time to participate in Comicstaan.
In the conversation, Gurleen also shared the challenges female comedians still face when it comes to acceptance. To learn more about it, watch the full video on the Curly Tales app now.
