Health Probe Underway After 30 Kochi Students Fall Ill from Suspected Food Contamination

What began as a regular afternoon at N-Able Training Institute in Thrikkakara, Kochi, took a sudden turn on Wednesday, when 30 students were rushed to city hospitals due to suspected food poisoning. The incident raised fresh concerns over food safety and hostel hygiene standards at private educational institutions in the city.

The incident, first reported by The Times of India, has health officials on alert and local representatives promising action. 30 students, including 10 boys and 20 girls, all showed the same worrying signs of vomiting, stomach pain, and loose motions. By Wednesday evening, ambulances and private vehicles had ferried them to a mix of government and private hospitals across the city. Thankfully, according to municipality health inspector Asif Shamsudheen, all the students were stable and discharged later that day.

But what exactly went wrong inside the hostel? That’s the question now driving an official inquiry. Health teams in Kochi swooped in immediately, collecting food and water samples from the hostel’s kitchen and premises to check for possible food poisoning. As Shamsudheen explained, there’s no penalty or closure order against the institute yet. The next step will depend entirely on lab results that are due in two days.

Representing the Karimakkadu division, where the incident occurred, local councillor Dinoob T G confirmed the institute operates from a rented facility. He stated that this issue will be raised in the local body council as soon as the final reports land. He further added that they, in no way, are willing to compromise or negotiate on the safety of students.

Reports Are Underway

No police case has been registered so far in the food poisoning case in Kochi. Thrikkakara police confirmed that no official complaints came in from students or their families. Reportedly, the institute’s management has covered all medical expenses as well. The N-Able Training Institute, a name familiar among students in Kerala seeking German language skills, hasn’t released any public statement on the incident yet.

While the immediate crisis has been managed, the incident has highlighted gaps in routine health inspections at private educational hostels in the city. This must be a push the Thrikkakara municipality officials needed to initiate vigilant periodic checks across similar institutions in the coming weeks, aiming to prevent such incidents from recurring. Authorities stated that collaborative efforts between health, food safety, and local governance bodies would be key in strengthening monitoring mechanisms.

For now, health officials remain focused on what those lab reports will reveal. But on the ground, among parents and local residents, one sentiment echoed loudly: student safety is paramount.
