Jammu is forecast to experience a heatwave, with temperatures likely to soar above 40 °C. Residents can expect scorching days and uncomfortable nights. The IMD defines a heatwave as occurring when the maximum temperature reaches at least 40°C, and at least 4.5°C above the normal average for the location.
Kashmir may also see hot and dry weather. While not classified as a heatwave, temperatures are still expected to be above normal for this time of year. Popular tourist destinations like Pahalgam, known for its pleasant summer climate, may see highs exceeding 25°C.
There is a glimmer of hope, however. The IMD predicts a shift in weather patterns around June 18th. From then on, there’s a chance of light rain or thunderstorms at isolated locations in the afternoons, offering some respite from the heat.

The heatwave and hot weather pose a health risk to vulnerable populations, particularly the elderly, young children, and those with chronic health conditions. Staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous activity during peak sunlight hours, and wearing loose, light-coloured clothing are crucial precautions.
For residents in Jammu, the scorching heat can disrupt daily routines. Consumption of cooling beverages and managing water intake are essential. Businesses and workplaces may need to adjust operating hours to avoid the hottest part of the day.
In Kashmir, the hot and dry weather conditions can increase the risk of wildfires. Authorities have advised caution and urged people to be mindful of fire safety practices. Tourists visiting the region are also recommended to dress appropriately for the warmer weather.
