The Hyderabad police recently cracked down on what is known as the ‘beggar mafia.’ This is an organised group of people who hog especially lucrative traffic signals and ward off any other people who might attempt to beg there. They manage to earn anywhere between ₹1.5 and ₹2 lakhs.

According to an article recently published by Telangana Today, these ‘beggar mafia’ families have complete control over the signals in the tri-commissionerates of Hyderabad and Cyberabad as well as Rachakonda.

The article quoted the police stating that a particular signal is taken over by an entire family comprising husband and wife as well as children. These people hog the signal and disallow anyone else from begging there. They come in the morning, around 10 AM, and stay till late in the evening.

The article states that after the day is over, they take an auto and go back home, often buying cheap alcohol and biryani. They most frequently occupy the signals in areas like Tank Bund, Jubilee Hills Checkpost, Paradise, Masab Tank, KBR Park, Checkpost, Chandrayangutta, Mehdipatnam and Abid Road, as well as Koti Women’s College.

On an average day, they manage to earn anywhere from ₹4,000 to ₹7,000. Many of these people, the police found, were also into the money-lending business. Many children, differently-abled people, as well as old men and women are lured into begging. They are paid somewhere around ₹200 per day.
