Every time a redevelopment project takes shape, a piece of history fades away. Now, Hyderabad is witnessing the demolition of the iconic Taj Banjara Hotel. Actress Genelia D’Souza has also expressed her sadness over the news. Read on to know more!

Hyderabad’s Iconic Taj Banjara Hotel Faces Demolition

One of the earliest luxury hotels in Hyderabad, Taj Banjara Hotel is spread across a 3.4-acre property. This property overlooks Banjara Lake and has long been a popular stay for travellers, celebrities, and business guests alike. However, after becoming one of the city’s most iconic properties, the hotel stopped operations in 2023.

As per Deccan Chronicle, the demolition of the luxury hotel is currently in progress. Workers have started taking down parts of the building. Before demolishing the structure, they removed doors, windows, electrical wiring, wooden fittings, iron fixtures, and other materials that could be reused. After clearing the interiors, they began breaking the main building. The demolition work started in April and is expected to continue for another four months.

Actress Genelia D’Souza Expresses Sadness

Actress Genelia D’Souza took to her Instagram story to express her sadness over the end of an era. She wrote, “My home for many many years”, reflecting how this iconic hotel was just a property for many people.

The Taj Banjara Hotel was initially managed by the ITC Group until 1986. After that, Taj GVK Hotels took over operations and managed the hotel for nearly four decades. The hotel later made headlines when the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) temporarily closed and sealed the property due to unpaid property taxes worth about ₹1.43 crore accumulated over two years.

Now, the property has been acquired by Auro Realty for approximately ₹315 crore. The company is planning to expand its presence in Hyderabad with premium residential and mixed-use developments.
