There are some places that look expensive; then there are places that look like they have watched history happen from the front row. Umaid Bhawan Palace belongs to the second category! Curly Tales got an exclusive peek of the Umaid Bhawan Palace and spoke to Maharaja Gaj Singh II. He also revealed his life journey growing up inside the palace. Scroll down to know more.

Maharaja Gaj Singh On Growing Up Inside Umaid Bhawan Palace

The palace does not ease you into its grandeur; it throws you straight into it. One corridor leads into another, with sandstone glowing under soft light and ceilings stretching impossibly high. We walked through the Maharaja Chamber, the Maharani Chamber, the Mardana Darbar, and room after room where royalty was preserved like memory.

But the strangest thing about being inside Umaid Bhawan Palace is this; after a point, the architecture stops being the main character. Because then Maharaja Gaj Singh walks in!  And suddenly the palace makes sense.

He lives inside the palace in his private residence, surrounded by a legacy most people can barely imagine carrying. Yet when he began speaking about his childhood there, the royal arches looked embarrassed. He remembered home the way anybody else remembers home, through food, family, and routine. He spoke about his grandmother cooking simple meals.. About growing up inside these massive walls without thinking of them as extraordinary because, to him, they simply were life.

Maharaja Gaj Singh Shares Emotional Childhood Memories

We asked him when he first understood the weight of the legacy around him. He said he realised it very young, around the age of four. That was when his father passed away. His Rajtilak was performed soon after, and somewhere in the middle of rituals, ceremonies, and people surrounding him, he understood something irreversible; his father would not be returning, and responsibility had arrived before childhood had even properly begun. Four years old!

At four, most children are still learning how to tie their shoelaces properly. He was inheriting a kingdom, a surname heavy with expectation, and an entire public identity he did not choose but had to grow into.

He said his mother conditioned him early for responsibility and taught him values that stayed with him through life. His grandmother, meanwhile, taught him something equally important, connection to the land and to the people.

The conversation wandered into Rajasthani culture after that, and he lit up in a different way while speaking about food. He spoke about preserving authentic Rajasthani food traditions at Umaid Bhawan Palace and ensuring they survive beyond nostalgia. The same thought extended to royal attire too. He explained that the clothing people associate with royalty was never just ornamental. Yes, it symbolised loyalty and power, but it was also practical, functional, designed for real life and real work.
