Tasty Trails Dagshai: Delicious Food With Scenic Views
Dagshai is a small cantonment town in Himachal Pradesh’s Solan district, sitting along the Kalka-Shimla route. The town dates back to 1847, when the British established a cantonment here after acquiring five villages from the Maharaja of Patiala. Its name is believed to come from Daag-e-Shahi, meaning a “royal mark,” a reference to an old practice of marking criminals before sending them away.
Today, Dagshai is the sort of place you can drive through without realising you’ve entered somewhere worth lingering in. And Tasty Trails, sitting along the highway, looks almost too ordinary at first.
From outside, there isn’t much to announce what awaits inside. But grab a table and look beyond your plate, and the setting does most of the talking.
The mountains sit right there. There are houses scattered across the hills, children playing nearby and, if you time it right, the famous toy train can be spotted making its way through the landscape. Suddenly, a highway food stop doesn’t feel particularly highway-ish anymore.
And you can stay for a while because the menu isn’t restricted to the usual tea-and-paratha pit stop. Breakfast, lunch or dinner; Tasty Trails has enough variety to make any of them work.

Chole Bhature For ₹80?
The chole bhature is an obvious order, especially when you find out it costs just ₹80! There’s also pav bhaji, chowmein and aloo paratha, all the familiar comfort-food suspects you want after being on the road.
Then comes the slightly unexpected bit: the pizza. It is small, crunchy and has a more contemporary feel than you might expect from a modest eatery in a hill town. It doesn’t try to be fancy; it simply manages to be surprisingly good at being what it is.
For me, though, the nicest part of Tasty Trails wasn’t on the menu. I ended up painting there!
There was something about sitting with the mountains in front of me, the sounds of everyday life happening around me, and enough time to actually pause that made pulling out the paints feel completely natural. It was one of those unplanned moments that make a road trip feel like more than just getting from one destination to another.
So yes, Tasty Trails is technically a roadside stop, but calling it just that feels like selling it short.
It’s the kind of place where you can pull over for an ₹80 plate of chole bhature and, before you know it, find yourself sitting there a little longer; watching the hills, waiting for the train, or simply doing nothing for once.
