Neel Ghose, Travel Trends & Destinations Expert from Skyscanner, explained that January has become an important month for travel planning. Searches in the first week of January 2026 increased by 25% compared to last year, showing strong interest in travel. He also said many travellers are open to visiting lesser-known places, and a large number plan to spend extra on a luxury hotel stay at the end of their trip. At the same time, travellers feel tired after a long year and stressed about high costs and too many options.

The research highlights key 2026 travel trends. Nearly 73% of Indians start planning trips in January, and 67% plan holidays at this time to relax and recharge. Travel remains a priority, even if it means personal sacrifices. About 49% have cut back on expenses like dining out or grooming to afford their last holiday. While saving for trips, 46% skipped buying new clothes, and 32% reduced social outings.

Despite strong interest, many travellers have not finalised their plans. Around 46% worry about costs, 45% struggle to decide when to travel, and 40% feel unsure about where to go. Half of Indian travellers said they would book sooner if they knew the cheapest destinations and best days to fly.
