In Mumbai, every neighbourhood has a vada pav stall that locals swear by. Some are known for fiery garlic chutney, others for their perfectly crisp batata vadas. But sitting in all its spicy glory in Byculla is a stall that has managed to become a landmark in its own right. Graduate Vada Pav has been feeding the city since 1993, reportedly serving around 3,000 vada pavs every day.
The Story Behind Graduate Vada Pav Is As Wholesome As Its Food
At first glance, “Graduate Vada Pav” sounds like one of those quirky names designed to grab attention. In reality, it has nothing to do with marketing! The man who founded the stall in 1993 had completed a degree in law. While many expected him to pursue a career in the legal profession, he chose a different, spicier and more crunchy-crispy path. Instead of stepping into a courtroom, he stepped behind a food counter, carrying forward his family’s business with the same dedication he had shown in his studies.
Customers soon began referring to the outlet as Graduate Vada Pav, a simple nod to the founder’s educational background.
Today, the business is proudly run by the second generation, who continue to honour the founder’s vision while introducing new ideas to keep the menu exciting. Even after more than 30 years, the stall continues to draw everyone from office-goers grabbing a quick breakfast to tourists making a special detour just to tick it off their Mumbai food list.

Menu Goes Far Beyond The Classic Vada Pav
The heart of the menu is still the classic vada pav that built the brand. Freshly fried batata vadas are swirled into soft pavs and paired with green chutney, dry garlic chutney and a fried green chilli. It’s the familiar combination that generations of Mumbaikars have grown up eating. But Graduate Vada Pav hasn’t stayed frozen in time.
Alongside its iconic original, the menu now features indulgent twists like Cheese Grilled Vada Pav, Cheese Mayo Grilled Vada Pav, Peri Peri Vada Pav, Tandoor Vada Pav, Indi Makhani Vada Pav, Boom Bam Grilled Vada Pav and the popular OP Grilled Vada Pav. There are also colourful Wafer Pav variations in flavours such as Peri Peri, Schezwan, Mexican Mayo, Tandoori and Cheese Mayo for those looking for something crunchier.
If you’re feeling particularly hungry, the stall’s oversized house specials, including the Mexican Monster, Peri Peri Beast, Cheese Mayo Toofan and King Makhni Bhau, offer a loaded take on Mumbai’s favourite street snack. The menu also features timeless favourites like bread pattice, samosas, samosa pav, batata vada and bhajiya pav, making sure traditionalists have just as many reasons to stop by.
Three decades after opening its shutters, Graduate Vada Pav continues to do what every great street food institution hopes to achieve. It serves nostalgia between bread, and we love them for it.
