Maharashtra has now taken a big decision. The state has banned the sale of junk food inside schools and within a 50-metre radius of all school premises. The order targets HFSS (high in fat, salt and sugar) food items to protect children’s health. This means no more junk food in school canteens!

No More Junk Food In & Around Maharashtra Schools

Maharashtra’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a statewide order prohibiting the sale, advertisement, marketing and free distribution of HFSS foods. No junk food will now be sold in school canteens or within a 50-metre radius of educational institutions. According to The Times of India, the banned items include ultra-processed foods, soft drinks, chips, fried snacks and other similar food items that are easily available.

In case of violations, the principal, school management and the committee will be held responsible. Moreover, canteens, mid-day meal centres and hostel kitchens within schools will not be allowed to operate without a valid FSSAI licence or registration. This new rule is applicable to all government, aided, private and residential schools. Schools affiliated with the State Board, CBSE, ICSE and other boards across Maharashtra will also have to follow this rule.

Schools Asked To Promote Wholesome Food

This new rule means that children will not be able to enjoy their usual snacks in schools. This includes samosas, vada pav, chips, chocolates and more. According to The Times of India, the FDA wants schools to put up food safety display boards showing details about the vendor, the type of food and its nutritional value. Plus, schools have also been asked to appoint a food safety supervisor and designate a ‘Health and Wellness Ambassador’.

Maharashtra’s FDA is also requesting schools to provide wholesome food to students, such as fruits, vegetables, pulses, milk and seasonal foods. And yes, there should also be clean drinking water, and the places where food is served should be clean and hygienic. This order aims to ensure that children across the state eat healthy food instead of junk food.
