Ghewar season has officially entered the chat, and if you are anywhere near Old Delhi, there is one box worth making space for. At Chaina Ram Sindhi Halwai, the Malai Ghewar comes looking almost too pretty to attack. Really, it is a golden, honeycomb-like disc layered with creamy malai and finished with nuts. Then you remember it is a sweet, not an installation, and the fork goes in.

Chaina Ram’s Malai Ghewar Is The Real Star

Chaina Ram has been around since 1901, when the family started its sweet business in Lahore’s Anarkali Bazaar. After Partition, the business moved to Delhi and eventually found its long-standing home near Fatehpuri in Chandni Chowk. More than a century later, the name is still attached to the same kind of old-school mithai-shop experience with glass counters, packed boxes, desi ghee and absolutely no interest in pretending that dessert needs to be minimalist.  And then there is the ghewar.

Oh my my!

The Malai Ghewar is currently listed among Chaina Ram’s top dishes, right alongside Sev Badam, Sohan Halwa, Pinni and Kaju Barfi. The current online menu prices Malai Ghewar at ₹980 per kg, while the Special Lal Ghewar costs ₹1,120 per kg.

A Sweet Shop With More Than A Century Of History

Ghewar’s characteristic porous structure gives it plenty of little pockets for sweetness to settle into, while the malai adds the soft, creamy hit on top. It is the kind of mithai where “I’ll just have a bite” is less of a plan and more of a wildly optimistic theory.

But stopping at ghewar would be a rookie mistake.

Chaina Ram’s Karachi Halwa is one of its longstanding signatures, while Sev Badam, Sohan Halwa, Pinni, Kaju Barfi, Patisa, Kalajam and Gulab Jamun keep the sweet counter busy. The savoury side has its own following too, with samosas, kachori, paneer pakoda and poori sabzi on the menu.

Still, if you are making the Chandni Chowk trip this season, start with the Malai Ghewar.

Chaina Ram’s Malai Ghewar remains the reason to stop at Fatehpuri, while its Karachi Halwa and Sev Badam make the sweet counter worth lingering over for a little longer.
