The Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport, also known as Bhogapuram International Airport in Andhra Pradesh, is all set to begin operations, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi scheduled to inaugurate it on August 1, 2026. Bhogapuram International Airport To Begin Operations In August
The Bhogapuram International Airport has been designed as more than just a transport hub, it is a tribute to Andhra’s landscape, culture and coastline. Built at an estimated cost of ₹5,000 crore, the airport is expected to play a key role in transforming Visakhapatnam into a global aviation and business hub.
According to India Today, the airport has already received its aerodrome licence from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), along with all the necessary safety, fire and environmental clearances.
In its first phase, it will be able to handle 6 million passengers annually, with plans to expand its capacity to 40 million passengers in the coming years. The terminal is equipped with modern facilities, including aerobridges, self-check-in and self-baggage drop systems, smart surveillance, advanced security infrastructure and an integrated operations and monitoring centre, ensuring a seamless travel experience for passengers.

An Airport Where Andhra’s Coastline, Culture & Nature Shape Every Detail
The Bhogapuram Airport’s most striking feature is its sweeping roofline, inspired by the flying fish, a species commonly found in the Bay of Bengal. The fluid form gives the building the appearance of movement while reflecting the region’s strong maritime identity. The airport’s design also borrows from Chuttilu, the traditional circular homes found in Andhra Pradesh, and the rolling hills of the Araku Valley.
Inside the terminal, visitors will find ceiling patterns and architectural details influenced by Rangoli (Muggulu), blending contemporary architecture with local art and craftsmanship. One of the terminal’s biggest engineering highlights is its expansive glass façade.
Built along a cyclone-prone coastline, the airport uses large, high-performance glass panels engineered to withstand strong coastal winds while allowing abundant natural light into the terminal. This creates bright, open interiors without compromising structural safety, a key consideration given Bhogapuram’s location on the Bay of Bengal.
Sustainability is another defining feature. The airport incorporates energy-efficient lighting, rainwater harvesting, recycled water systems and a solar power plant. This helps reduce its environmental footprint while supporting future expansion
