Mumbai metro commuters, we have some good news! Mumbai’s Metro network is set for another major expansion, with Metro Lines 4 and 4A receiving safety clearance for their rolling stock. Approval from the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) brings the two corridors a step closer to opening to passengers, though some mandatory certifications are still pending. Mumbai Metro 4, 4A To Boost Thane Connectivity As Lines Get Safety Nod
According to The Times of India, a partial opening of Metro 4 and 4A is likely later this year, with the first phase covering the 10.5-km stretch between Gaimukh and Cadbury Junction. The section will have 10 stations, including Gaimukh, Govaniwada, Kasarvadavali, Vijay Garden, Dongripada, Tikuji-ni-wadi, Manpada, Kapurbawdi, Majiwada and Cadbury Junction.
The safety clearance has been issued to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited (MMMOCL). Once the remaining approvals are secured, the corridor could begin its initial passenger operations with six rakes.
It should be noted that Metro 4 and 4A could become the first Mumbai Metro corridor to begin operations without a dedicated car depot being ready.
Until the planned Mogharpada depot along Ghodbunder Road is completed, trains will be stationed and serviced at Gaimukh. A pit has already been created there for maintenance, while the station has two island platforms and four lines, with two earmarked for passenger operations and the others for servicing the rakes.
The rakes specifically procured for Metro 4 and 4A have not yet arrived. As an interim measure, trains currently being used on Metro Lines 2A, 7 and 9 from the Charkop depot will be deployed on the new corridor.

Route And Stations Of The Upcoming Line
The full Metro 4 corridor will connect Wadala, Ghatkopar, Kasarvadavali and Gaimukh, covering around 35.2 km. Metro Line 4 itself spans 32.32 km, while Metro 4A covers the 2.88-km Kasarvadavali-Gaimukh stretch.
The first phase between Gaimukh and Cadbury Junction is expected to provide a major boost to connectivity across Thane and the Ghodbunder Road belt, where commuters regularly face heavy traffic.
Trial runs on the corridor were flagged off in September 2025, with the initial trial section covering Gaimukh, Govaniwada, Kasarvadavali and Vijay Garden.
For commuters in Thane and surrounding areas, the latest safety clearance is a significant step forward. While the metro is not ready to open just yet, the project has moved closer to passenger operations, with a partial launch now expected later this year.
