S Janaki, the legendary Indian singer affectionately known as the ‘Nightingale of South India’, passed away on July 11, 2026, in Mysuru at the age of 88 due to age-related health problems. During her 60-year-long career, she sang thousands of songs in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada and more. So, in her memory, let’s look back at five of her most famous songs and where they were filmed in India.

1. Senthoora Poove: Karnataka

Senthoora Poove from the movie 16 Vayathinile is a popular Tamil song sung by S  Janaki. The song featuring Kamal Haasan and Sridevi won the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for the legendary singer. The hit song was shot outdoors in and around Mysuru and Kollegal in Karnataka. Moreover, the song featured beautiful lush green fields as the backdrop, which added to its charm. 

2. Sirimalle Puvva: Andhra Pradesh

Sirimalle Puvva is one of the most iconic Telugu songs sung by S Janaki. The song from the classic movie Padaharella Vayasu stars a young Sridevi. One of the memorable songs of the South Indian film industry, it is known for its soulful vocals and timeless charm. The song was shot in the East Godavari and Visakhapatnam regions of Andhra Pradesh. The makers basically wanted to capture the scenic landscapes of the Godavari River delta and nearby areas.

3. Yaar Bina Chain Kaha Re: Mumbai

The evergreen song Yaar Bina Chain Kaha Re, sung by Bappi Lahiri and S Janaki, is from the 1985 Hindi movie Saaheb. Featuring actors Anil Kapoor and Amrita Singh, the track is still played at parties even after so many years. It was shot on indoor sets in various film studios in Mumbai.

4. Jano Mere Jano: Madh Island, Mumbai

Jano Mere Jano from the movie Satyamev Jayate is one of the most popular Hindi songs by S Janaki. Starring Vinod Khanna and Meenakshi Seshadri, the beautiful song was filmed at Erangal Beach in Madh Island, Mumbai. Notably, the beach is known for its peaceful surroundings and is a lesser-known local getaway compared to other beaches in Mumbai.

5. Naguva Nayana Madhura Mouna: Bengaluru

Naguva Nayana Madhura Mouna is a popular classic Kannada song. The romantic track was sung by S. P. Balasubrahmanyam and S Janaki for the 1983 movie Pallavi Anu Pallavi, starring Anil Kapoor and Lakshmi. The hit song was shot in Bengaluru at public spaces, including the famous Cubbon Park and Minsk Square.
