Varanasi has no shortage of places where people go to look upwards. At the Bharat Mata Mandir, you are asked to look down. Inside the temple, on the floor, lies one of the strangest and most striking representations of India you will find anywhere: a massive three-dimensional relief map of undivided India carved out of marble. Mountains rise from the surface, rivers cut through the landscape, and coastlines take shape across the stone.

The Temple Was Inaugurated By Mahatma Gandhi In 1936

The temple sits within the Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith campus and was built by Babu Shiv Prasad Gupta, a nationalist, philanthropist and freedom-movement figure. Mahatma Gandhi inaugurated it in 1936, at a time when India was still under British rule. Gandhi’s own chronology records that he opened the Bharat Mata Temple in Banaras on October 25 that year.

The idea behind the temple was unusual even then. Instead of centring the shrine around a conventional deity, its most awe-striking feature was the land itself. The marble map represents the geographical imagination of India before Partition, including territories that are today parts of Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Myanmar

Woah, let that sink in.

A Temple Built Around An Idea Of India

And the craftsmanship is no small feat. Around 762 pieces of marble were used, with about 20 craftsmen and sculptors working on the map over six years. One inch on the relief represents roughly 6.4 miles on the actual landscape. There is even a viewing point in the basement where the changes in elevation become visible, allowing visitors to see the mountains and valleys as actual contours rather than lines on a map.

There is also a fascinating literary footnote here. Maithili Sharan Gupt, one of the major Hindi poets of his era, wrote a poem for the temple’s inauguration, which is displayed inside the building.

But perhaps the most revealing part of the temple is what Gandhi wanted it to represent. At its inauguration, he spoke of the shrine as a place that could bring together people across religions, castes and beliefs. The idea was bigger than marble and geography though; the country itself could become a shared symbol.

That makes Bharat Mata Mandir a fascinating relic of the freedom movement. It captures a moment when India was still an idea being fought over, imagined and assembled, and someone decided to give that idea a physical form.
