After Delhi, Mumbai To Get Its Own Bharat Mandapam Style Convention Centres?

While Mumbai has convention centres such as Jio World and NESCO, it lacks a dedicated venue capable of hosting exhibitions, seminars, and events of international scale like Delhi’s Bharat Mandapam. To address this gap, the Maharashtra Urban Development Department has proposed developing mega convention hubs across Mumbai and the state. Here’s everything you need to know.

Bharat Mandapam-Style Convention Centres In Mumbai?

According to Hindustan Times, the Maharashtra Urban Development Department has proposed developing large, Bharat Mandapam-style convention centres to support Mumbai’s growing need for world-class exhibition spaces. The plan includes introducing a provision under the Unified Development Control and Promotional Regulations to enable the construction of such facilities across the state, excluding areas governed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.

For context, Delhi’s Bharat Mandapam ranks among India’s largest convention venues. Under the proposed policy, new convention hubs in Maharashtra would require a minimum land parcel of 30 acres and at least 50,000 square metres of built-up convention space. Projects would also need approvals from the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation or the respective local civic authorities.

Here’s All You Need To Know About This

Hindustan Times reported that the government may either develop these convention centres itself or partner with private players to build and operate them. Landowners will also be allowed to construct such facilities on their own plots, while using the remaining land for residential or commercial projects under existing Floor Space Index (FSI) and Transfer of Development Rights (TDR) norms.

As per the proposal, only half of the land needs to be allocated for the convention centre, with the rest open for separate development. Additionally, up to 30% of the total built-up area can be used for hotels, banquet halls, and other supporting facilities.
