After Nearly 4 Years, Himachal’s Underrated Kangra Valley Toy Train Is Back On Track

One of India’s most underrated toy train routes, the Kangra Valley Railway has finally started full operations after nearly four years. Often overshadowed by the famous Kalka-Shimla Railway, this Himalayan toy train offers stunning views of the mountains, making your trip memorable. Read on to know more.

Himalayan Toy Train Resumes Operations After 4 Years

As per a report by India Today, often overlooked by the famous Kalka-Shimla Railway, this colonial-style narrow-gauge line runs between Pathankot in Punjab and Jogindernagar in Himachal Pradesh. The train offers stunning views of the Kangra Valley and the snow-covered Dhauladhar range.

The route has remained partially suspended since August 2022, when severe floods damaged the ancient Chakki Bridge between Pathankot and Kandwal. While trains remained operating on a shortened section, the full route is now back in service, giving travellers a chance to experience one of the country’s most scenic rail journeys.

Opened back in 1929 during British rule, the Kangra Valley Railway extends around 164 kilometres and passes through tea gardens, river valleys, temples, villages and charming hill towns such as Palampur and Baijnath. Unlike the Kalka-Shimla Railway, which is famous for its tunnels, steep climbs and architectural beauty, the Kangra route offers long stretches of scenic valley views and a more relaxed travel journey.

The Key Features Of The Toy Train

One of the major highlights of the journey is the stunning view of the Dhauladhar mountain range. Passengers are often advised to grab a window seat, especially one on the left side, while heading towards Jogindernagar, to enjoy the best views.

The railway passes through more than 900 bridges and remains one of the few remaining narrow-gauge mountain lines in India. Its slower travel pace, quieter stations and fewer crowds make it especially appealing for travellers seeking an offbeat Himalayan experience.

The revival of services comes at just the perfect time, before the monsoon season that surely transforms the valley into lush green scenery. Railway travellers and nature lovers both consider the route a hidden gem that deserves far more attention than it receives. While discussions on converting the line to broad gauge are ongoing, no final approval has been announced.
