Assam Flood Death Toll Rises
The death toll due to the Assam floods has increased to 75 after seven more people died in the last 24 hours. As per News18, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), all seven people who died recently were from the Nazira area of Sivasagar district. There have been no reports of missing people.
However, the flood situation in Assam is improving as the number of affected people has dropped from 4.45 lakh to 3.32 lakh. Still, these 3.32 lakh people continue to struggle with floodwaters across seven districts. The affected districts include Sivasagar, Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon, Sonitpur, and Kamrup Metropolitan. Floodwaters have affected 21 revenue circles and 622 villages. Among them, Charaideo remains the worst-hit district with 1.42 lakh affected people, followed by Sivasagar with 97,074 people and Jorhat with 57,371 people.

Relief Package Announced For Families
Amid the ongoing Assam flood crisis, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a major relief package for families who lost their loved ones. The state government has increased the compensation from ₹4 lakh to ₹9 lakh per deceased person. News18 reported that the additional ₹5 lakh will be provided through the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
To receive the compensation, families no longer have to submit a post-mortem report. Instead, a certificate issued by the concerned Circle Officer will be enough to process the claim. The compensation will also be provided to the families of people who remain missing if their bodies are not found within one month and the Circle Officer certifies the case.
As interim financial assistance, ₹15,000 has been announced by the Assam government. This assistance is for severely affected families in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, and Golaghat.
Rescue and relief work is still going on in the flood-hit areas. Right now, 81 relief camps are giving shelter to 32,477 people who had to leave their homes. Another 34 relief centres are providing food, clean drinking water, medicines, baby food, tarpaulins, and other essential supplies. Teams from the Army, Air Force, NDRF, SDRF, Fire and Emergency Services, medical staff, and local volunteers are helping people.
