The flood situation in Assam has turned critical, with at least 31 people losing their lives and over 5.65 lakh people affected across several districts. After a brief respite, heavy rains on July 21 worsened the flooding as the Brahmaputra and its tributaries continued to flow above danger levels. The Army has joined the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and fire and emergency services to carry out rescue and relief operations in upper Assam.

According to Hindustan Times, at least 21 more people died in Assam due to floods on Tuesday, taking the state’s death toll to 31. Continuous rainfall has worsened the flood situation, with over 5.65 lakh people affected across 16 districts.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said Sivasagar reported the highest number of deaths at 13, followed by Charaideo with 5, Golaghat with 2, and Jorhat with 1.

The affected districts include Golaghat, Kamrup, Hojai, Dibrugarh, Biswanath, Dhemaji, Sonitpur, Udalguri, Nagaon, Charaideo, Kamrup (Metro), Jorhat, Tinsukia, Karbi Anglong, Lakhimpur and Sivasagar.
Sivasagar is the worst-hit district, with around 3.59 lakh people affected. Jorhat follows with 87,662 affected people, while Charaideo and Dibrugarh have reported 72,646 and 18,615 affected residents, respectively.

IMD Issues Yellow Alert
According to Deccan Chronicle, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Assam, forecasting thunderstorms and heavy rainfall at isolated places over the next four days.
The IMD’s Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Guwahati said that the upper air cyclonic circulation over central Assam and adjoining Nagaland has weakened. However, flood conditions remain critical, with the Central Water Commission (CWC) reporting that the Brahmaputra continues to flow above the danger level at Neamatighat. Several other rivers, including the Buridihing, Dikhou, Desang and Dhansiri, are also flowing at severe flood levels.
