While travelling by flight, all we wish for is less time at security checks and fewer flight delays or cancellations. Guess what? Travellers flying from Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport are in for a major surprise. The airport is preparing for major upgrades that will make departures and arrivals smoother. Read on to know more!
Bengaluru Airport Set For Major Operational Upgrade
After dual-runway operations were introduced in 2019, the current upgrades are the biggest so far. As per Moneycontrol, the new plans have received approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Airports Authority of India (AAI), and the Ministry of Civil Aviation. These upgrades at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport aim to improve on-time performance, reduce congestion in the air and on the ground, and help airlines save fuel.
The biggest benefit for passengers is that flights will be able to take off from both runways at the same time. Right now, a flight on one runway often has to wait until the other runway is free. With the new satellite-based flight paths, both runways can operate independently.

First Indian Airport To Test Point Merge System
The airport is also set to introduce 22 new satellite-guided Standard Instrument Departure (SID) routes. Moneycontrol reported that as for the arriving flights, Bengaluru is likely to become the first airport in India to test the Point Merge System (PMS). The system will run on a 91-day trial.
Under the new system, planes will follow a fixed route while landing instead of getting frequent directions from air traffic controllers. This will make the landing smoother for passengers with fewer changes in direction. It will also help airlines save fuel and reduce carbon emissions.
The new landing system will first be tested only when the weather is good and air traffic is not too busy. Officials will closely watch how it works before deciding whether to use it permanently. Along with this, the airport will also introduce 12 new arrival routes to help flights land more smoothly and efficiently.
