1. 7.2 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Japan
As per a report by NDTV, on Thursday morning, a strong 7.2-magnitude earthquake hit off the coast of northern Japan’sJapan’s Iwate Prefecture. Tremors of the earthquake were felt as far as Tokyo, causing minor damage. The damages included fallen household items, collapsed ceiling parts, and even transport disruptions. Additionally, some bullet train services were also temporarily suspended, while emergency services responded to reports of people trapped in lifts and stuck doors. Officials stated no casualties, major damage, or abnormalities at nearby nuclear facilities were reported , and no tsunami warning was issued.

2. Venezuela Declares Emergency After Double Earthquake
On Wednesday night, two powerful earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 struck near Caracas within 39 seconds, prompting a state of emergency across VenezuelaVenezuela. At least 32 people were killed and more than 700 injured as buildings collapsed and rescue teams searched for survivors. Officials have also shut down Simón Bolívar International Airport following significant structural damage, while schools were closed and healthcare workers were called in to assist. More than 20 aftershocks were recorded, raising concerns over further damage and casualties.
3. Europe Hit by Deadly Heatwave
A severe heatwave has covered much of Europe, with temperatures exceeding 40°C in many countries, leading to health alerts, transport disruptions and wildfire crisis. Among these, France has been among the hardest-hit nations, with at least 18 deaths, including two children who were left in a hot car, while Bordeaux recorded a record-breaking 41.9°C. Additionally, The United Kingdom could see temperatures reach 39°C, with nationwide heat-health alerts in place. While Spain is experiencing its first official heatwave of 2026 and Italy has issued red alerts for almost 15 cities. Experts have also warned that Europe is warming at more than twice the global average rate, making extreme heatwave increasingly frequent and intense.
4. Europe Heatwave Disrupts Eurostar Services
The ongoing European heatwave has begun disrupting international rail travel, with Eurostar cancelling multiple services between London and Paris due to extreme weather conditions. If reports are to be believed around two trains per day were canceled between June 22 and 25 as rising temperatures put pressure on rail infrastructure. While most services continue to operate, some high-speed trains in Belgium have been ordered to reduce speeds, resulting in longer journey times and delays. Commuters affected by cancellations can rebook for free, claim an e-voucher, or request a refund as authorities across France and the UK maintain heat alerts amid temperatures nearing 40°C.
5. WHO Set to Declare Cruise Ship Hantavirus Outbreak Over
The World Health Organization has announced that the deadly hantavirus outbreak linked to the Dutch cruise ship MV Hondius is expected to be officially declared over on July 2 if no new cases emerge. The outbreak resulted in 12 confirmed cases, one probable case and three deaths, prompting an international health alert. More than 650 contacts across 33 countries and territories were monitored, with only a small number still completing quarantine. While the immediate crisis is ending, researchers will continue studying virus samples and exposed individuals to improve future diagnostics, treatments and vaccine development.
