Cyclone Ditwah has created havoc in Chennai, and on Monday, residents struggled through another day of heavy rain as the storm, though weakened, continued to soak the city. The rain started on Sunday night and didn’t ease, leaving many neighbourhoods waterlogged again.

Cyclone Ditwah Hits Chennai

Since Sunday night, Cyclone Ditwah has triggered continuous rainfall across Chennai in Tamil Nadu. The Greater Chennai Corporation’s control centre recorded around 10 cm of rain between 8.30 AM and 7 PM on Monday. The Regional Meteorological Centre reported the day’s highest rainfall at 13.2 cm, while the Ennore rain gauge showed an even higher 15.69 cm. Northern neighbourhoods saw the strongest impact as the showers refused to slow down.

According to The New Indian Express, many low-lying areas flooded quickly, especially Pattalam in Pulianthope, which faces this issue every monsoon. Streets there were filled with knee-deep water, and residents said it felt like a “never-ending” problem.

Several Neighbourhoods Affected

Several neighbourhoods across Chennai reported heavy water stagnation on Monday. In Pulianthope’s KM Garden, water even entered homes, with officials saying the area’s low-lying terrain makes it vulnerable. Vyasarpadi faced widespread flooding in Mullai Nagar, Thendral Nagar and the SIPCOT Industrial Estate, reported the New Indian Express. In Perambur, residents said the situation was worse than last year and blamed clogged stormwater drains.

Velachery’s AGS Colony saw flooding across its main roads and cross streets, and a fallen tree branch damaged a transformer, causing a power outage. Other areas like OMR, K K Nagar, Madhavaram, MMDA Mathur, T Nagar and Tondiarpet also dealt with flooded internal roads. Parts of Anna Nagar, including the main roads and J Block, experienced water stagnation as well.

Traffic moved very slowly in many parts of T Nagar on Monday. Areas near North Usman Road and Chakrapani Street were hit the worst because waterlogging made it difficult for vehicles to move smoothly.

We hope the situation in Chennai and nearby areas gets under control soon.
