As India and the world celebrated Mother’s Day on May 10, online food deliveries, cake orders, and dining out saw a significant surge across the country. In fact, Swiggy reported that cake orders peaked at nearly 30,000 between 7-8 PM on Sunday, with as many as 636 cakes ordered in a single minute at 7:49 PM. Here are some interesting insights from this report.

Swiggy Reveals How India Celebrated Mother’s Day

On Mother’s Day, Swiggy reported a 26.24% surge in overall food delivery orders, with Bengaluru and Mumbai leading the demand for cake orders. The report revealed that the indulgence began right at midnight, with a customer in Hyderabad placing the first cake order of the day at 12:04 AM.

Swiggy delivered an average of 13,039 cakes every hour across India, making cakes the most ordered dessert on this special occasion. National demand peaked in the evening, with close to 30,000 cakes delivered between 7 and 8 PM. Bengaluru and Mumbai dominated cake orders, together accounting for nearly 60,000 orders.

In tier-II cities, Patna and Dehradun recorded the highest number of cake orders. One customer in Patna ordered eight baked cheesecakes worth ₹17,280, while another customer in Dindigul, Tamil Nadu, celebrated the occasion by ordering 15 honey cakes in a single go.

Massive Surge In Fine-Dining Reservations

Not just online orders, Mother’s Day celebrations also extended to some of the country’s finest restaurants. Swiggy Dineout recorded a 30.1% growth in bookings compared to Mother’s Day last year. This shift was marked by a significant 71.8% surge in fine-dining reservations, highlighting consumers’ growing appetite for indulgent celebrations.

Bengaluru recorded the highest number of diners in the country, followed by Delhi and Hyderabad, which saw week-on-week growth surges of 50% and 31.4%, respectively. The momentum extended to emerging markets as well, with Ahmedabad recording the highest number of diners, followed by Jaipur and Chandigarh.

Coming to the most exciting part—a customer in Bengaluru spent ₹1,12,459 via Swiggy Dineout, marking the single highest bill in the country on Mother’s Day. Another customer in Varanasi spent ₹1,06,653 on a single booking, showing that the spirit of celebration wasn’t limited to metro cities.
