FSSAI Raises Concern Over Energy Drinks
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued notices to six beverage companies over misleading claims related to their products. As per The Telegraph India, the companies that received the notices include some of our go-tos, such as Red Bull Energy Drink, PepsiCo India’s Adrenaline Rush Energy Drink, Reliance Consumer Products’ Campa Energy Drink-Gold Boost, Sting Energy Drink, Hell Energy, and Coca-Cola-backed Monster Energy.
According to FSSAI, these products use the tag “energy drink,” but there is no officially approved category called “Energy Drink” under its rules. FSSAI also said that its food category system is only meant to classify food products, and companies cannot use these categories as product names or on labels.

What Other Practices Has FSSAI Objected To?
Apart from the term ‘energy drink,’ FSSAI also raised concerns about some promotional claims. The Telegraph India reported that the food products are not allowed to make claims about improving health or treating health-related conditions. Some examples of such claims are “vitalises body and mind,” “enhancing focus,” and more.
In recent months, FSSAI has taken action against several companies for misleading advertisements and incorrect product labels. The regulator has issued notices for rule violations and has also acted on complaints received from consumers.
