Gulmarg Introduces Odd-Even Vehicle Rule For The 1st Time Amid Tourist Rush

Odd-Even Rule Gulmarg

In a first-of-its-kind move, authorities in Gulmarg have introduced an odd-even vehicle rule to regulate traffic and protect the hill resort’s fragile ecosystem. The system came into effect on Tuesday to ease congestion and reduce pressure from the growing influx of tourists.

Gulmarg Introduces Odd-Even Vehicle Rule

According to NDTV, the Gulmarg Development Authority has directed that the entry of all four-wheelers into the hill resort will now be regulated based on the last digit of their registration number. This marks the first time an odd-even vehicle rule has been introduced in a tourist place like Gulmarg.

Under this new rule, commercial and private vehicles with registration numbers ending with odd digits–1, 3, 5, 7 and 9–will be permitted to enter Gulmarg only on odd dates. Meanwhile, vehicles with registration numbers ending with even digits–0, 2, 4, 6 and 8–will be allowed entry only on even dates.

It is to be noted that transport and freight vehicles have been exempted from the odd-even rule in Gulmarg. These restrictions will be in place from 8 AM to 8 PM every day.

Here’s All You Need To Know About This

According to The Times of India, Gulmarg has parking space for around 1,500 vehicles. However, amid the ongoing tourist rush, the popular ski resort has been receiving more than 6,000 vehicles every day. This massive influx of tourists, coupled with the region’s ecological fragility, prompted authorities to implement the odd-even vehicle rule.

For now, the rule has been introduced on a pilot basis for one month, from July 5 to August 5. During this period, authorities will evaluate the policy’s impact on traffic management, environmental conservation and visitor convenience.
