When travelling in India, we all carry electronic devices like mobile phones, laptops, and much more. However, sometimes these devices can put passengers’ lives at risk. To keep passengers safe from such accidents, Indian Railways has taken an important step. No more mobile charging points will remain switched on at night. Scroll down for details!

No Charging Phones On Trains At Night

Charging points in trains can put passengers’ lives at risk if they cause a fire. According to ETV Bharat report, to prevent such incidents, Indian Railways has decided that mobile charging points will remain switched off from 11 PM to 5 AM. Officers and supervisors will also conduct surprise inspections to make sure that staff follow these instructions.

This decision comes after several incidents involving mobile phones and power banks catching fire. One such incident happened recently, on October 24. A power bank exploded while charging overnight in an AC coach of the Mumbai-Howrah Mail, operating under South Eastern Railway (SER). The Railways will also provide proper training and counselling to staff to prevent such accidents in the future.

When Was The Rule First Introduced?

The night-time charging restriction is not new. Indian Railways first introduced the rule on June 19, 2014, after a fire broke out on the Bengaluru-Hazur Sahib Nanded Express. The Commissioner of Railway Safety recommended this safety measure. As per NDTV report, in March 2021, the Railways again highlighted the importance of enforcing this rule.

So, if you’re planning an overnight train journey, make sure you charge your phones and other electronic devices before the restricted hours. Also, while charging your devices during permitted hours, keep them away from pillows and bedding to reduce the risk of fire.
