X user Paritsh Sharma (@Paritolkks) shared the travel experience of one of his friends. In the post, he mentioned how his friend decided to ditch a trip to Rishikesh and travel to Sri Lanka instead. While searching for accommodation in Rishikesh, he found that decent hotels were charging between ₹9,000 and ₹15,000 per night. Another factor that influenced the change in destination was the flight cost, as a one-way ticket from Mumbai to Delhi was around ₹7,000 to ₹8,000.
He then decided to visit Sri Lanka instead. There, he found a five-star sea-facing hotel for just ₹3,000 to ₹5,000 per night. According to the post, the destination was also more peaceful, cleaner, and budget-friendly. Lastly, Sharma added, “Indian tourism is getting too expensive for what it offers. If this continues, the country will lose appeal as people find better value elsewhere.”

This post highlighting the rising cost of travel in India has gone viral online, and many netizens have shared their reactions.
A netizen questioned the claim and wrote, “Which 5-star sea-facing hotel at ₹3,000??? I had to pay ₹15,000 per night for the cheapest room at ITC Ratnadipa this month.”
Another commenter shared, “Price actually depends on the locality of hotels. What was the locality he was searching in, and for how many people was he booking hotels? Yes, prices are inflated, but there are a few budget hotels too.”
Meanwhile, a social media user revealed, “I spent 1.5 lakhs for 3 people, Mumbai to Rishikesh round trip. I booked last minute and went for my yoga teacher training, so didn’t have much choice. But dad did mention that we could have gone anywhere in Asia in that price.”
