Ahead of this year’s Dahi Handi celebrations, the Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation (VVCMC) has provided a free accident insurance cover of up to ₹10 lakh to every registered Govinda participating in the festival. The initiative, introduced under the civic body’s Gopal Kala accident insurance scheme, aims to provide financial protection to participants involved in forming human pyramids, which can carry risks of falls and serious injuries. 8,000 Govindas Of Vasai-Virar Covered Under Scheme
As per a report by Mid-day, the VVCMC had invited Govinda teams to register their members for the insurance scheme by September 3. This year, 118 Govinda teams have signed up, covering around 8,000 participants across the Vasai-Virar municipal area. According to the civic administration, registrations have increased compared with last year, leading to greater awareness among participants about safety and accident protection during Dahi Handi celebrations.

Govindas traditionally form multi-level human pyramids to reach and break an earthen pot suspended above the ground. As participants climb several levels, the risk of falls and injuries increases, making safety precautions crucial. The insurance scheme is designed to provide financial assistance in case registered participants suffer injuries or accidents during covered Dahi Handi activities. While the cover does not prevent accidents, it can help reduce the financial burden associated with serious injuries.
Govinda Teams Are Requested To Follow Safety Guidelines
The civic body has urged Govinda teams, organisers and residents to follow safety guidelines and ensure that only registered participants take part in activities covered under the scheme.
The accident insurance initiative has been implemented through the Sports Department of the VVCMC. With around 8,000 Govindas from 118 teams covered this year, the civic body said the scheme adds an extra layer of financial protection for participants while encouraging safer Dahi Handi celebrations across Vasai-Virar.
