Nautapa 2026: Why Does Astrology Consider This Extreme Summer Heat Period Significant?

Summers in India are intense. This season makes it difficult for people to step out, especially in the afternoons. It’s not easy even at home, as we constantly keep the air conditioners on and still end up feeling sweaty. But during this summer season, one particular period of extreme heat holds special importance every year. That period is called Nautapa. Read on to know what it is!

When Does Nautapa Begin?

According to the Hindu calendar, Nautapa begins when the Sun enters Rohini Nakshatra during the month of Jyeshtha. In 2026, this will happen on May 25 at 3:44 PM. As per ABP, the Sun will remain in Rohini Nakshatra till June 8, but the first nine days of this period are called Nautapa. This is why Nautapa will be observed from May 25 to June 2 this year.

People usually associate Nautapa with extreme heat, strong sunlight and hot winds. During these nine days, the Sun’s rays are believed to become more intense, which increases temperatures in many places.

Why Are These Days Important?

Astrologers believe Nautapa is more significant this year because it is taking place during Adhik Maas, also called Malmas. It is considered a rare event. Since Adhik Maas has fallen in the month of Jyeshtha, the lunar month will continue for two cycles this time. Experts have also noted that there will be two Tuesdays during the nine days of Nautapa.

In astrology, Tuesday is connected with Mars, the planet linked to fire and energy. Because of these combinations, astrologers believe this year’s Nautapa may bring stronger heatwaves, with temperatures reaching up to 48°C to 50°C in some areas.

According to traditional beliefs, the extreme heat and hot winds during Nautapa help control pests, insects and other harmful organisms. People believe that if there is not enough heat during this period, rats, locusts, bacteria, snakes, scorpions and crop-damaging insects may increase quickly. It is also believed that weak heat during Nautapa could later cause strong storms that may harm crops and farming.
