74% Of Indian Travellers Support Sustainable Tourism; 49% Prefer Less-Crowded Destinations

Recently, Booking.com’s Travel and Sustainability Report 2026 revealed that Indian travellers are prioritising sustainability with more environmental awareness, as it has become an important aspect of how they plan, book and experience the trips. Scroll down to know more.

Booking.com Reveals Travellers Choosing Sustainable Travel

The report found that 74% of Indian travellers agree that people need to act now and make more sustainable choices to protect the planet for the upcoming generations, while 72% are more committed to travel sustainably than they were a year ago. In addition to it, 58% want to leave places better than they found them, and 71% say environmentally friendly practices that they experience while travelling inspire them to follow the same habits in everyday life.

Sustainability is also influencing travel behaviour. As per the data, nearly 47% of Indian visitors state that they consciously try to make more sustainable travel choices whenever they can, while 35% say sustainability regularly influences their travel decisions.

Not only this, but the destination preferences are changing as well. Instead of focusing only on popular tourist attractions, 49% of travellers want to visit places before they become crowded, while 45% believe travelling to lesser-known destinations helps lower their environmental impact.

Travellers Are Embracing Off-Season Travel

Many tourists are also embracing off-season travel. Among those opting to travel outside peak periods, 71% highlight avoiding crowds as a major reason, while 55% want to decrease pressure on destinations. Better accommodation availability (68%) and cost savings (51%) are also additional motivations.

The report points out a growing demand for more transparent sustainability information during the booking procedure. Around 65% of Indian travellers want travel websites and apps to use uniform sustainability certifications or labels, making it easier to identify responsible travel options.

Additionally, 73% plan to actively filter for sustainable tours and activities, 70% intend to choose accommodations with sustainability certifications, and 68% are likely to look for electric or hybrid rental vehicle options. Affordability remains an important factor. Nearly 47% say discounts or financial incentives would encourage them to travel more sustainably, while 45% want guidance on making eco-friendly choices without increasing their travel budgets.
