Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently attended a ceremony in the Netherlands marking the return of the 11th-century copper plates from the Chola era. He took to his official X account to share the good news with fellow Indians and wrote, “A moment of joy for all Indians! Copper plates from the Chola era, dating back to the 11th century, are being brought back to India from the Netherlands. I had the privilege of joining Prime Minister Mark Rutte at the event marking this occasion.”
These 1,000-year-old Chola-era copper plates are an important part of India’s rich heritage. The collection includes 21 large and three small plates. These plates also feature inscriptions engraved in Tamil, which PM Modi called one of the “world’s most beautiful languages”.

Why Are These Historic Copper Plates Important?
According to India Today, India has been trying to bring back these 21 Anaimangalam Copper Plates, also known as the Leiden Plates, in the Netherlands, since 2012. They are among the most significant surviving records of the Chola dynasty and are considered important artefacts of Tamil heritage. These copper plates belong to the time of Rajaraja Chola I and weigh nearly 30 kilograms. They are bound together with a fascinating bronze ring that bears the royal seal of the Chola dynasty.
The plates formalise a promise that Emperor Rajendra Chola I reportedly received orally from his father, Rajaraja Chola I. These plates also signify the glory of the Cholas’ culture and naval power. The plates were taken to the Netherlands in the 1700s by Florentius Camper, a Dutch official. He was in India when Nagapattinam, the city mentioned on the plates, was under Dutch control.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed gratitude to the Government of the Netherlands and to Leiden University, which has preserved these plates since the 19th century.
