The amount of bulk Scotch whisky India imported from the UK grew 10 times in August 2026 compared to the same month last year. The surge came after the historic India-UK Free Trade Agreement, which was signed on July 15. Here’s what we know so far about this development.

Bulk Scotch Whisky Imports Surge In India

According to Moneycontrol, imports of bulk Scotch whisky surged 1,000% year-on-year to $12.39 million in August 2026. This came after the India-UK Free Trade Agreement reduced import duties on qualifying Scotch whisky from 150% to 75%. There was also a sharp rise in bulk shipments. The import value of Scotch whisky in containers exceeding two litres jumped nearly 679% to $2.5 million in August.

The increase in imports was not limited to Scotch whisky. Imports of gin in containers holding two litres or less surged nearly 150% year-on-year to $0.84 million in August. Rum imports also increased by more than 147%.

Import Duties To Fall Further?

Before the deal, Scotch whisky imports attracted a 150% import duty. However, the agreement cut this to 75% for qualifying Scotch whisky. With the duty reduced, liquor companies rushed to import larger quantities of bulk Scotch whisky at the lower rate. According to Moneycontrol, under the trade agreement, import duties on qualifying Scotch whisky are scheduled to fall further to 40% over the next 10 years.

Now, let’s talk about what this means for consumers. The cost of manufacturing popular blended whiskies in India is expected to remain lower. This means your everyday Indian blended whiskies could remain affordable and easily available.
