World Sandwich Day is a day when we can skip all other dishes and only eat sandwiches because, honestly, not only are they delicious, but they are also comforting and quick to make. Armaan Jain, grandson of filmmaker Raj Kapoor and known for his movie Lekar Hum Deewana Dil, recently shared an easy recipe to make a Bombay Sandwich. It is a famous street food featuring buttered white bread layered with chutney and boiled vegetables.
Here are the ingredients you need for the recipe:
- Coriander leaves
- Green chillies
- Garlic
- Bread
- Chana dal
- Salt, to taste
- Jeera powder
- Chaat masala
- Lemon
- Two slices of bread
- Butter
- Boiled potatoes
- Sliced cucumber
- Sliced onions
- Sliced tomatoes
- Cheese (optional)
The ingredient list may seem long, but note that it does not have any fancy ingredients. You will easily find all these vegetables and spices in your kitchen pantry. You can adjust the measurements according to how many sandwiches you need to make.

Here’s The Method
Now, here’s the complete method to make Armaan Jain’s Bombay Sandwich.
- We will first make the chutney. Put coriander leaves, green chillies, garlic, small pieces of bread (to bind), a handful of chana dal, salt, jeera powder, lemon juice and chaat masala in a blender.
- Add some water and blend all the ingredients until the consistency turns smooth and chutney-like.
- Now, let’s make the sandwich. Take two slices of bread and spread butter and chutney on both slices. Start layering one bread slice with thinly sliced boiled potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers and onions.
- Add a little bit of chaat masala and some grated cheese on top for that extra cheesy flavour.
- Cover it with the other slice of bread. Coat the electric toaster with some more butter and toast the sandwich until it turns crisp and golden.
And that’s it, you are done! Enjoy it with your favourite dip, sauce or chutney, along with a cup of chai or maybe a glass of cold coffee for that nostalgic feel.
Armaan Jain also got a little nostalgic and shared that he used to buy Bombay Sandwiches for just ₹10 from Dinesh Bhai, a vendor outside his school. This snack forms a very important part of his food memories, too.
