Yoga Day 2026: Indian Navy Performs Underwater Yoga; Kolkata Attempts Record With 500 Boats

People across the world are celebrating International Yoga Day today. In India, several unique events have been organised, with people participating in large numbers. Among them, two celebrations have especially grabbed attention: 40 submariners performing yoga underwater and Kolkata attempting a record with 500 people practising yoga on boats. Yoga Day: Indian Navy Submariners Perform Underwater Yoga

INS Satvahana (@IN_Satavahana) on X shared photos of how the Indian Navy organised a special underwater yoga session. On June 20, the 40 submariners performed yoga together underwater and we’re awestruck with their perfect coordination. During the event, they all practised different yoga poses, including bhujangasana. The session highlighted their strong concentration, breath control, and ability to stay calm and coordinated in a challenging environment. 

Free Press Journal reported that this special yoga session was conducted by trained Naval Yoga instructors and guided by Lieutenant Commander Aarush Sharma. What impressed social media users was how the participants practised controlled breathing, focused movements, and mental exercises while performing yoga underwater.

Kolkata Eyes Record With 500 People Performing On Boat

On International Yoga Day, Kolkata planned to make a Guinness World Record. The city decided to hold a special celebration on the iconic Hooghly River. As per Telegraph India, more than 500 tourist and passenger boats, including vessels from the Sundarbans, were set to gather at Babughat and take part in special yoga demonstrations as part of the event.

Kolkata planned the boat yoga event as part of its larger International Yoga Day celebrations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the main programme at Red Road. Hundreds of yoga instructors were expected to take part in the initiative, helping promote yoga and raise awareness about this year’s theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing.”
