According to The Times of India, with its expanded visa-free policy, Indonesia has experienced a substantial surge in inbound tourism since May 2024.
Reportedly, Indonesia recorded 1.15 million international visitors in May 2024. This is almost a 7.36% increase from April 2024 and a 20% surge from May 2023! The key arrivals have been seen from Malaysia (17.47%), Australia (11.98%), and Singapore (9.69%). Tourism Surge Boosts Economic Growth In The Country
Indonesia’s economy depends heavily on its tourism sector and their visa-free policy has helped boost this sector. This industry provides millions of job opportunities and generates significant revenue for the country. The tourism sector makes up approximately 6% of Indonesia’s national GDP. According to The Times of India, in 2023, Indonesia’s GDP was projected to reach $5.58 trillion.
This surpassed the official forecast by World Economics by a massive 42%. And experts believe that this was mainly due to the country’s growing popularity as a vacation destination in the world. Indonesia also adopted sustainable tourism practices in a bid to conserve its rich natural resources and cultural heritage, which has been widely appreciated across the world.
